Guinness on tap, a proper Sunday roast with Yorkshire puddings, and GAA on the screens: The Irish Embassy gets the important pub maths right. The three-meat roast is the plate to chase, with roast potatoes, gravy and all the familiar trimmings piled on without ceremony.
Chicken dippers, chilli-lime chicken strips, pigs in blankets and stew keep the menu firmly in comfort-food territory. The vegan Beyond Burger also saves plant-based eaters from another evening negotiating with a curry menu. Portions are generous, which is handy after trying to calculate how many whiskeys the shelf contains.
Darts and pool give the room something to do between matches, while Tuesday and Friday bring solo live music. Monday quiz night and Friday’s Name That Tune pull in regulars who know their music and appear to have trained for it.
The decor feels like an Irish pub because it commits to dark wood, sport and stout. Darren and Jamie keep the place personal, and the outdoor smoking tables are useful when the match runs long.
Fish and chips are not the reason to cross the island; roast dinner, Guinness, Thai draft beer and a televised match are. The roast potatoes have earned more loyalty than several governments.
