JP Place
Description
Large, clean rooms with balconies are the point here, especially if a firm Thai-style mattress and strong air-con beat boutique furniture on your list. Hot showers have proper pressure, which remains one of life’s less glamorous island luxuries.
JP Place sits on Koh Lanta’s quieter east side, close to Old Town and well placed for riding across the island. A scooter changes the geography completely; without one, this stretch of road leaves you with a long, hot walk and plenty of time to reconsider your footwear.
Born is the man to ask for island logistics. He sorts scooters and ferry transfers, and knows the useful lunch stops and dinner spots beyond the standard beach-road circuit. The building is simple and a little dated, but the rooms feel more like compact apartments than crash pads.
Road-facing rooms catch traffic noise from early morning, so request a room away from the road and pack earplugs if sleep is sacred. The balcony rooms suit a few unhurried days exploring Old Town, the mangroves, and the west-coast beaches by bike.
