Description
Driftwood, sea-facing stools and a passion fruit mojito make Free Zone Bar one of the better places to lose track of an afternoon on Koh Lanta. The bar sits on a quiet corner by the beach, well away from the west-coast roadside churn.
Menn and Mimi run the place with rock, blues and soul on the speakers, plus a cocktail list far longer than this little wooden shack has any right to hold. Margaritas land properly, Mai Tais have a following, and the mojitos are the house specialty. The passion fruit version is the one to start with.
The furniture and bar itself are built from woodwork by the owner, so the rough-hewn look has character. Cats and dogs drift through, the tide fills the view, and nobody is trying to turn sunset drinks into a nightclub audition.
Free Zone Bar belongs to slow drinking, good music and staring at the sea with very little on the agenda. Take the sea-facing seats before sunset; that corner earns its reputation once the light drops.
