Description

A one-kilometre concrete boardwalk runs straight through Thung Yipeng’s mangroves, with mudskippers, tiny crabs, lizards and birdlife doing their daily business below. It is the best low-effort nature stop on Koh Lanta for anyone who prefers looking at mangroves properly over merely driving past them.

The walk is peaceful and well kept, with enough shade to make the forest feel cooler than the road outside. Keep your eyes low for the fiddler crabs and high for kingfishers and eagles. Macaques appear around the waterways, though wildlife has no obligation to clock in for photographs.

Sunrise trips in a traditional wooden boat are the special outing here. The boat glides through narrow channels without the racket of an engine, and breakfast arrives wrapped in banana leaf with coffee. Wi is the guide to ask for on the sunrise tour.

Kayaks and longtail boats take different routes through the channels and out towards the sea, but the boardwalk is the better value for a short visit. Use the car park, walk the loop at an unhurried pace, then stop at one of the small waterside restaurants before heading back inland.

Insider Tip
For the quietest walk, arrive early and pause near the muddy edges of the boardwalk; the small crabs and mudskippers are far easier to spot before the path gets busy.
