Pra-Ae Beach
Description
Three kilometres of firm, pale sand gives Pra-Ae Beach room for morning runs, long swims and sunset walks without playing towel Tetris. Locals call it Long Beach, which saves everyone from pretending Thai geography needed more mystery.
The central stretch has a clean sandy seabed and deepens quickly, so it suits confident swimmers and anyone who likes floating beyond ankle-deep water. The north end adds decent snorkelling, while the shore stays broad enough for frisbee, volleyball and doing very little with conviction.
Pine trees break up the beachfront, with palms scattered between the bars, massage huts, mini marts and small resorts. Shade is limited once you leave the trees, so midday here is a hat-and-water operation, not a character-building exercise.
Sunset is the busy spell, with beach bars filling up along the sand. Jam Bar is a good stop for drinks and music; Lym’s has reliable pad Thai and cashew chicken after a long walk down the coast. The northern end is best for a quieter swim, while the middle gives you the longest uninterrupted beach walk on Koh Lanta.
