Description

Fine sand, clear water and a small crescent of trees make Nui Beach one of the island’s better quiet-swim stops. It stays compact, which means you can see the whole bay from your towel and still find room to breathe.

The rocky edges are the interesting bit. Small sea creatures gather around the exposed stones, and the water is good for a short snorkel when it is calm. Watch your footing on the way in: submerged rocks sit just below the surface and make barefoot charging a surprisingly poor strategy.

Access runs through the restaurant above the sand, down a flight of large steps. There is parking near the top, plus a shower and toilet by the restaurant. The beach bar handles cold drinks, simple food and sunset cocktails without turning the bay into a full-volume beach club.

Go late afternoon for the light across the cliffs and stay through sunset. Tree shade disappears around midday, and the far forest end of the beach collects washed-up rubbish, so spread out nearer the centre of the bay.

Use the restaurant access from the main road for the simplest route down; the jungle path is mosquito-heavy and the rocky approach is awkward with bags.
