Description

Bamboo ladders, slick rock, a crawl-on-all-fours squeeze and a proper bat-filled chamber make Khao Mai Khew Cave the island’s best dirty afternoon out. This is caving with knees involved, not a stroll past a souvenir stand.

The approach cuts through rubber trees and climbs hard in places. Inside, the route threads over rocks, narrow passages and bamboo ledges before opening into larger chambers. A guide and headlamp are part of the trip, which is sensible given that “I know where I’m going” has ended many fine days in very damp trousers.

Wear trekking shoes or trainers with grip, long trousers, and clothes you are happy to stain with mud. The cave route is slippery after rain, dark throughout, and tight enough to punish claustrophobia. Steep ladders and low crawls rule out anyone with limited mobility.

Fit older kids can handle it, but this belongs to active adults and teenagers who enjoy scrambling more than posing. Pick the longer route for the full cave experience; the short route is for those whose enthusiasm expires somewhere around the first confined gap.
