Hidden Hut Cafe & Eatery
Description
Moo Hong, the slow-cooked southern pork belly, is the dish to chase down the rubber-plantation lane for. The spicy pork curry has proper heat, and the squid in black ink is far more memorable than its colour suggests.
Hidden Hut sits inland near Old Town, behind a turnoff past 7-Eleven and a rather unromantic patch of roadside dumping. Keep going. The dining rooms are modern and cool, with air conditioning indoors and a shaded rooftop terrace looking over the trees.
Breakfast has more ambition than the standard island toast-and-regret routine. Eggs Benedict, pancakes, waffles and sandwiches share space with red curry wild boar, Pad Thai, chicken cashew nut and beef green-curry fried rice. Smoothies arrive fruit-heavy rather than padded out with ice, while the orange coffee – espresso over orange juice and ice – is unexpectedly excellent.
Vegetarian and vegan meals can be adapted with tofu, which gives the large menu some useful flexibility. Families use the roomy tables for long lunches and birthday gatherings; food-focused riders should make the inland detour for the southern dishes, coffee and terrace.
