Pine and Mok handle the full-retreat mood particularly well, with slow, skilled work that leaves the rest of the afternoon unsuitable for ambitious plans.
Balinese massage is a strong choice for firmer, flowing bodywork, while the Herbalist Signature massage brings herbal techniques into the mix. Stress Release with Herbal Balm suits tight shoulders and travel-stiff backs. Boote is a good name for Balinese massage and foot reflexology; Bud is the one to book for serious massage work.
The spa sits upstairs, away from the boutique floor, with marble tiles, wicker touches, cool colours, air conditioning and reclining chairs for foot treatments. There is a private bathroom and shower, plus a drink after treatment, which is how a massage appointment quietly becomes an afternoon project.
Downstairs, the boutique stocks clothes, unusual jewellery, sunglasses, organic Thai cosmetics and a dangerously cheap sticker basket. Frozen yoghurt adds chocolate or vanilla with toppings such as granola, cranberries, Oreo crumbs and sprinkles – a fairly effective argument against going straight back to the beach.
