Description
Mussaman curry with sweet potato is the dish to pin on your map, followed closely by the green curry fish and seafood Pad Thai. Cookkai handles Thai food with more conviction than its sprawling menu first suggests, and the sticky rice with mango has proper chew.
Whole fish arrives in several sauces, while steamed fish, tom yum, seafood fried rice and breaded prawns keep the seafood side busy. Portions are large enough to share, especially the hotplate mixed seafood and vegetable dishes. The three-sauce whole fish runs sweet, so pick a curry or tom yum if you prefer sharper flavours.
The room is rustic wood under a high roof on Long Beach’s main road, with enough air moving through to make dinner tolerable after sunset. There is beach seating in the evening, cold beer, solid margaritas and a cocktail list that does not treat lime as an optional rumour.
Breakfast, burgers, pizza and noodle soups sit alongside the Thai menu, which is useful for groups with wildly incompatible appetites. Cash only, so do not arrive with a card and the confidence of a man entering an airport lounge.
