Shade, benches, ticket counters and a useful knot of snack shops make Ban Sala Dan Pier the practical start point for ferries around the Andaman. Boats link Koh Lanta with Phi Phi, Phuket and Krabi, while speedboats and tour boats use the same waterfront.
The covered waiting area is the bit that matters. It has room to sit without roasting beside the road, plus ATMs, travel agents, toilets and food within a few steps. Ferry fumes drift through the terminal, because large boats are not famous for smelling of lemongrass.
Arrive with time to find the right operator and check in at the correct desk. The pier gets busy around departures, especially in the morning, and cash is needed for small terminal costs and toilets.
Sala Dan town begins immediately outside, with convenience stores, banks, restaurants and pickups clustered around the approach road. Fat Pig is a solid lunch stop nearby before a later boat, particularly if the ferry timetable has handed you an accidental spare hour.
