VR Minimart & Restaurant
Description
Tom yum squid, pineapple rice and a Panang curry with shrimp are the plates to chase at VR, with the Andaman doing its blue-and-sparkly thing a few metres away. The squid dishes have more punch than the plastic-chair setting suggests.
The menu wanders happily across Thai staples, Indian-fusion naan and beach-breakfast territory. Chicken or tuna naan is the local repeat order, while spicy minced beef, papaya salad and Thai beef salad bring proper heat. Point at the menu if needed; English is limited and the food arrives without needing a dissertation.
Dinner belongs on the beach-facing tables, especially near sunset, with crabs occasionally marching past below. It is relaxed, cheap and unfussy, built for a long lunch or a curry after swimming.
The attached minimart is useful for basics, and the beach massage shack next door turns an ordinary meal stop into a suspiciously efficient afternoon. VR has stayed on the island’s repeat-eating circuit for good reason: fresh fish, punchy Thai food and a front-row strip of sand.
