Vollendung Bakery & Cafe
Description
Proper dark rye and crackly sourdough are the point here, displayed in a handsome Old Town shophouse that smells far too convincing to walk past. The loaves have a firm crust, good chew and enough flavour to carry butter, eggs or cheese without collapsing into polite sponge.
The pizza sandwich is the lunch order, built on bread that has no interest in behaving like standard island sandwich bread. Avocado toast with fried egg, bacon-egg-cheese sandwiches and tofu scramble with avocado mash cover breakfast well. Grab a choco-banana muffin or warm German cheesecake if restraint has already left the building.
Coffee drinkers should try it black: the lighter-roast Thai beans have more character than the usual dark, burnt cup found around the island. Mango smoothies and the avocado-honey smoothie are thick, fresh and substantial enough to delay lunch, which is an unusually efficient use of fruit.
German jam, handmade cookies and plastic-free touches give the place its own slightly meticulous personality. Vollendung is for bread obsessives, proper coffee drinkers and anyone staying around Old Town who has reached their limit of packaged toast; take a loaf of sourdough or multigrain brown bread for the next morning.
