Uncle O Restaurant
Description
Mango sticky rice is the thing to leave room for here: rich coconut rice, ripe mango, and none of the sad fridge-aftertaste found at too many roadside counters. The spring rolls also punch far above their humble appearance, with a crisp shell and a proper hot filling.
Uncle O’s cooking leans simple, fresh and full-bodied. Pad Thai, chicken with cashew nuts, Thai basil chicken and curry all arrive in generous portions, while the Panang vegetable curry is available on request for meat-free diners. Smoothies are cheap enough to turn one into a dangerous habit.
The room is small, cosy and family-run, just off the beach and on the main road. It can be very quiet in low season, which gives lunch a pleasantly unhurried feel. Food is cooked fresh, so settle in.
This is for proper Thai comfort food at local-budget prices, not polished beach-club dining. The menu is compact, the flavours land, and mango sticky rice alone justifies a return visit.
