Thung Yee Peng Seafood
Description
Deep-fried seabass, grilled tiger prawns and steamed blue crab arrive with the sort of freshness that makes freezer cabinets feel personally insulting. The black-ink squid and Thai-style oysters are equally worth the detour, and seafood stays refreshingly cheap for Koh Lanta.
Tables sit over the mangrove water beside the fish farm, with kayaks sliding past and little fish gathering below the boards. It is less a polished beach restaurant and more a floating bamboo lunch stop with proper cooking behind it. Cats in assorted outfits patrol the deck, because apparently the mangroves needed a costume department.
The kitchen cooks to order, so settle in. A crab caught during the fishing activity can be cooked here, and mangrove boat trips leave from the same waterside setup.
Thung Yee Peng Seafood belongs on a north-island day around the mangrove boardwalk, especially for Foodies who prefer whole fish, shellfish and river views to a generic sunset menu. Keep an eye on the waterline too: monitor lizards and bright little mangrove crabs turn up around the channels.
