Description
The special massaman arrives with beef braised for hours, and it is the right answer on a menu full of tempting distractions. The tofu laab, Penang curry, som tam and wild vegetables keep the Thai side serious, while chicken cashew stir-fry has earned a small cult following among long-stayers.
Joom’s leafy, reed-roofed terrace sits slightly above the road, softening the traffic racket without pretending the road has vanished. Old jazz, warm lights and a proper little bar give dinner more character than the laminated-menu exterior suggests. The menu itself looks as though it survived a minor flood, then carried on regardless.
Tempura prawns are a strong opening act, with prawn cashew stir-fry and chicken cakes close behind. Thai green curry can be set to a sensible heat level, and the kitchen handles vegetarian and vegan versions of most dishes. Fruit shakes, cocktails and cold beers extend the evening without requiring a migration elsewhere.
Western food is present for mixed groups, including burgers and steaks, but the Thai cooking is why The Galaxy gets repeat dinners. Take the massaman or tofu laab over the burger and spend the saved indecision on another cocktail under the lights.
