South Lanta Restaurant
Description
Chilli fried rice arrives with proper heat, not the tourist version that merely waved at a chilli from across the road. The Thai basil fried rice has the same full savoury punch, and morning glory lands glossy with garlic and sauce.
Pad Thai is the reliable choice here, with fresh fruit shakes doing useful work after a beach run. Papaya salad can take four chillies and tofu without losing its balance, while the coconut lassi is far better than it has any right to be beside a jungle road.
South Lanta sits near Nui Bay, the elephant park and the road toward the national park, with a quiet, clean room surrounded by greenery. It is cheap, portions are generous, and dishes are cooked to order. The food has more intent than plenty of resort kitchens, which is awkward for the resorts but excellent for lunch.
Breakfast holds up as well as dinner, so it is a solid stop after beach hopping or before pushing farther south. Keep the meal Thai: fried rice, basil, papaya salad, Pad Thai and a mango, lime or coconut shake are the reason to pull in.
