Sawasdee Restaurant
Description
Fried garlic snapper arrives with crisp skin, firm flesh and enough aromatic garlic to make the plate smell better than most restaurants taste. Sawasdee does Thai food best: stir-fried morning glory, chicken basil with rice, pomelo papaya salad and properly punchy green mango salad.
The menu is enormous, stretching from breakfast through curries, salads, grilled plates and the usual European detour. Ignore the burger section. The Thai kitchen has plenty to say without sending a cheeseburger in to translate.
Portions are big, prices stay low and the setting is a relaxed roadside stop on the Klong Dao main road. Families can feed everyone without conducting a hostage negotiation over spice, while anyone chasing heat should point straight at the pomelo papaya salad.
Deep-fried chicken and vegetable tempura make easy sharing plates, and the coconut shake is worth ordering even after a full meal. The laundry next door is useful for long-stay beach clothes, though the snapper is the thing that turns a practical stop into dinner.
