Description

The som tam here has the sharp lime hit and proper chilli bite that Long Beach often sands down for holiday palates. Pair it with pad kra pao, or settle into the Massaman curry, which arrives rich, warm and dangerously easy to finish.

Thai food is the point, with a proper vegetarian run that includes panang curry with egg tofu and vegetables prepared without fish sauce. The seafood in tamarind sauce is another strong pick, sweet-sour and built for a plate of rice. Curries taste cooked in a family kitchen because they are not trying to audition for a hotel buffet.

A small restaurant and adjoining bar sit a few steps from the beach, with a relaxed evening mood and enough room to linger over a beer after dinner. It is cheap by Long Beach standards, though the food carries more flavour than the bill appears to have authorised.

Breakfast hours are not food-service hours, so do not arrive expecting a full Thai menu first thing in the morning. Save Sanctuary for lunch or dinner, and make the papaya salad your opening argument.
