Sam Pee Nong Family Seafood
Description
The fried fish with ginger, chilli prawns and crab dishes are the reason to pull over before Bamboo Beach. Sam Pee Nong sits on the cliff above the bay, with a wide sea view that makes a long lunch dangerously easy.
Seafood is the smart bet: whole fried Thai-style fish, king prawns, squid and crab arrive alongside proper Thai staples. The massaman curry, panang gai, larb muu and spicy papaya salad hold their own too. Fresh coconut helps with the chilli situation, which has all the subtlety of a motorbike horn.
The menu is enormous, photo-led and translated beyond English, covering noodles, fried rice, cashew chicken, burgers, pizzas, pasta and sandwiches. That breadth is useful for mixed appetites, though the kitchen’s strongest hand is clearly seafood and Thai food.
Tables facing Bamboo Beach get the full point of the stop, especially on a south-island motorbike loop. It is dog-friendly, has cocktails and wine, and the cliff-edge setting gives even a simple bowl of chicken glass-noodle soup rather more theatre than it requested.
