Rim Su Raw Restaurant
Description
Beef noodle soup is the reason to pull over at Rim Su Raw. The broth has real depth, the beef is properly tender, and it lands with the sort of chilli warmth that makes air-conditioning seem like an extravagant invention.
Pad Thai is the other safe bet, cooked with crunchy vegetables and none of the sugary sludge that passes for the dish in too many beach-road kitchens. Khao pad nam prik platu brings fried mackerel, rice and a serious hit of spice; khao pad prik nuea with a crispy egg is equally good road-food fuel.
The restaurant sits beside the mosque near the Mai Kaew Cave turn, on the inland route between the west coast and Old Town. It is a simple roadside room with picture menus and little English, so point, smile and let the food do the translating.
Halal Thai cooking, iced desserts and coconut smoothies make this a far more useful stop than its basic setting suggests. Daytime heat builds quickly inside because there is no fan, so grab a seat before the road starts radiating heat like a griddle.
