Old Town Seafood
Description
Crispy fried prawns are the order here: properly crunchy outside, juicy in the middle, and far more memorable than their modest name suggests. Add a mango sticky rice after, plus a mango smoothie if you fancy drinking dessert through a straw.
The tables face the water at the first stretch of Old Town’s pier-side restaurants, with long-tail boats, mangroves and sea filling the view. It is spacious, clean and built for a lingering lunch after a boat trip, though the large menu needs a firm hand.
Seafood comes in the big-ticket part of the menu. Grilled shrimp, boiled crab and black-pepper lobster are available, but this is not the cheap-and-cheerful stop for a pile of shellfish. Bring crab tools or strong fingers; whole crab arrives gloriously intact, because civilisation has not yet solved that particular problem.
Thai curries, fried dishes and straightforward seafood do better work than the sandwich corner. The setting carries sunset well, but lunch is the sharper call: sit near the water, order the fried prawns, and leave the lobster to those feeling financially athletic.
