Description
Crispy pork with morning glory is the plate to chase at Number 9, all salty crunch, garlic, chilli and enough proper wok heat to wake up a sleepy holiday appetite. The pad kra pao with crispy pork has a loyal following too; add an egg and stop pretending rice is merely a side dish.
This small roadside Thai restaurant puts more care into familiar dishes than its plain frontage suggests. Pad Thai, pad see ew and the flat noodles land well, while massaman curry and green papaya salad bring deeper flavours than the usual holiday-menu autopilot.
Mango sticky rice is worth saving room for, and the Pink Lady cocktail has become a house favourite. There is live guitar on some evenings, kept at a volume that allows conversation – a minor miracle in a restaurant with instruments.
The room is cosy, decorated with distressed wood and close to the road, so this is dinner with passing traffic. Point at the numbered menu if needed, particularly for the flat noodles, and settle in for Thai food that takes its seasoning seriously.
