Description

Beef noodle soup with homemade chilli paste is the reason Mon Hashery has a following far beyond a quick Lotus stop. Add vinegar and fish sauce at the table, then stop tinkering before you turn a deeply good bowl into a chemistry experiment.

The stall sits directly outside Lotus, with a few simple tables and three women moving between wok, soup pots and orders. Pad Thai lands properly sweet, sharp and smoky. Pad krapow gai, chicken with garlic over rice, tom yum noodles and fried rice all hold up, while chicken noodle soup comes with meatballs and proper broth.

Vegetarian food gets more attention than the average roadside stall. Tofu can replace meat across much of the menu, including the egg noodle bowls, so vegetarians are not stranded with fried rice and existential disappointment.

Portions are moderate, prices stay local, and the pace suits a quick lunch, takeaway, or dinner after supermarket shopping. Bring your own drink; iced water and a tray of chilli condiments are already on hand. The beef noodles are the one dish that can derail a sensible plan to eat somewhere different tomorrow.
