Description
Soft white sand, coconut palms and a broad sweep of bay make Maiphai Bay the south-island beach for doing very little with commitment. A small beach bar, restaurant, sun loungers and an outdoor shower cover the practical side; the rest is sea, shade and a national-park edge with no built-up strip behind it.
The middle of the bay gives the cleanest swim, with deeper water and sand underfoot. Rocks sit along the edges and become more obvious at low tide, so this is not the place for charging blindly into the water in flip-flops.
Cows cross the beach toward evening, and monkeys turn up near the southern end. Neither has signed a contract to entertain you, which is probably for the best. The wide sand stays pleasantly open, and there is easy space to park nearby.
The road in is rough gravel past local farmland, so scooters need patience and cars need to take it slow. Maiphai Bay rewards a full afternoon with a book, a cold drink and a swim from the middle of the shore, not a frantic five-minute photo stop.
