M Thai Food
Description
Khao soi is the order here, full stop. The coconut curry is thick, properly spiced, and arrives with crunchy noodles, chilli, pickles and extra bits to tune the bowl to your own tolerance for pain.
Chicken, beef, seafood and tofu all get a turn in the khao soi, which is useful on an island where this northern dish is too often reduced to yellow soup with a garnish. The basil pork, laab, Thai fried noodles and sweet-and-sour chicken hold up well too, while the spicy mango salad comes with substantial prawns.
The grilled seabass and charcoal chicken are worth the longer wait, especially on BBQ nights. Fish goes straight onto the grill, so settle in with a fruit shake and accept that speed is not the point of fire.
It is a small, bright roadside room with bamboo furniture in Klong Khong, not a candlelit date-night production. Lunch stays calmer; dinner fills up, and the best tables disappear before the first bowl of curry has had time to cool.
