Description
Papaya salad with a chosen chilli level, cold beers, and a pool table under a roof assembled from found objects: Lay Bar has more character in one corner than most polished beach bars manage all season. The decor is a proper rummage – painted signs, odd bits of timber, salvaged furniture, and enough small details to keep your eyes occupied between rounds.
It sits beside the road with the Andaman Sea on one side and resorts nearby, yet keeps the prices firmly in local-bar territory. Fried fish, chicken, burgers and Thai dishes cover the food side without pretending to be a restaurant with a branding consultant hiding in the kitchen.
Pool, darts, UNO and Connect Four give the evening somewhere to go after the first drink. Live music turns up on selected nights, and the crowd blends island regulars with passing travellers.
The furniture is rough, the setting is gloriously ramshackle, and that is precisely the point. Settle near the pool table, inspect the handmade clutter, and buy a beer bottle condom because apparently that is a thing worth owning.
