Last Beach Restaurant
Description
Fried squid, whole fish and papaya salad are the orders that matter here, eaten on a raised wooden platform above Klong Jark sand. The fish arrives properly crisp, the squid has bite, and the mango shake is worth treating as a separate course.
Deep in the south at Klong Jark, Last Beach has the rare asset of a quiet beach without a concrete frontage trying to sell you a lifestyle. Hammocks and low beach chairs sit a few metres from the bar, while floor tables and sea-facing seats handle the slower version of lunch.
The Thai menu goes beyond the beach-bar basics. Chicken with cashew nuts is excellent, as are massaman curry, panang curry, pad Thai and prawn fried rice. Vegetarians have enough choice to avoid the sad fried-vegetable compromise, including vegan breakfast porridge.
Lunch fills up fast, so claim a platform table early or settle in later for sunset. This place rewards an unhurried afternoon: swim, shower off the salt, find a hammock, then watch Klong Jark go quiet as the light drops.
