Description

Tempura prawns, mango shakes and a sunset-facing patch of sand are the reason Kung Fu Bar keeps pulling people down to the south of Koh Lanta. Reggae rolls through the speakers, cold beer arrives fast, and the sea is close enough to make shoes feel wildly overambitious.

The Thai food has proper winners: fried rice with plenty of flavour, chicken cashew, egg rolls and fruit smoothies made from the fruit sitting in front of you. Cocktails and juices fit the long-afternoon programme well, particularly after a swim off the sandy beach.

Seating is a cheerful jumble of plastic chairs, colourful umbrellas and shaded corners. It looks more beach shack than polished resort, which is precisely the point. A shower beside the bar saves the scooter seat from becoming a saltwater experiment.

Claim shade before late afternoon, then stay put for the sunset over the water. Monkeys sometimes patrol the beach edge, presumably checking whether anyone has left a mango shake unattended.
