Koh Yai Restaurant
Description
Stir-fried sea bass arrives properly seasoned, with garlic, pepper and enough heat to justify the cold shake beside it. Koh Yai does unfussy southern Thai staples with big portions and prices that leave room for another beer.
The papaya salad has crunch and a proper chilli kick, while pad Thai, garlic beef with rice and squid with garlic and pepper cover the dependable comfort-food end of the menu. Rice-topped plates keep lunch cheap. Fresh coconut, passion fruit and other fruit shakes are worth treating as part of the meal, not decorative plumbing.
Mango sticky rice and grilled banana finish without the sugar avalanche found at too many roadside dessert counters. The banana has actual character, which is more than can be said for several bananas on this island.
The dining area is simple and relaxed, with country music occasionally drifting through Thai dinner. Stick to the seafood, somtam and fried rice when the room fills up; those are the dishes that give this little roadside kitchen its pull.
