Klong Jark Cafe & Restaurant
Description
King mackerel from the ice display goes straight to the barbecue and arrives smoky, firm and far more memorable than it has any right to be. Klong Jark Cafe & Restaurant also turns out a cracking seafood fried rice, green prawn curry, seafood chilli paste and papaya salad.
Mango sticky rice is the dessert to leave room for. The rice is properly coconut-rich, the mango does its job without theatrical intervention, and the whole thing lands better after a beach afternoon than another banana pancake ever will.
Tables sit on sand at the southern end of Klong Jark Beach, with the sea in front and resident cats circulating beneath the chairs. Tiny crabs, ants and worms also use the sand floor, because nature has declined to install tiles. Sunset is the obvious slot, especially with a cocktail and the occasional evening fire show.
Sue runs the place with her family, and the atmosphere stays relaxed across breakfast, lunch and dinner. It suits Foodies after Thai cooking with proper heat and beachgoers who prefer a low-key shoreline meal; the grilled fish is the reason to detour down this end of the island.
