Description

Soft rice, clean-cut fish and tightly rolled maki put Kha Num 289 at the top of Koh Lanta’s Japanese dinner list. The salmon rolls and Lanta rolls are the safest opening move, while sashimi lands with the sort of freshness that makes supermarket sushi feel faintly embarrassed.

The menu stays focused: sushi, sashimi, gyoza, karaage, donburi, curry rice and proper udon. The teriyaki beef donburi has enough substance for a full dinner, and the tofu udon is a strong pick for anyone avoiding wheat; the noodles are rice-based. Tempura prawn donburi puts local seafood to good use without turning dinner into a lecture about provenance.

Kla cooks in a tiny wooden roadside room with three indoor tables, a few counter seats and limited outdoor space. Music stays low, the room feels intimate, and the whole place rewards an unhurried dinner after a long beach day. Umeshu over ice is worth adding if Japanese beer has begun to feel like a duty.

Book ahead for dinner. A California roll is dangerously easy to order twice, which is less a warning than a prediction.
