Katikala Restaurant
Description
Pineapple fried rice arrives baked inside the fruit, which is both dinner and a small act of tropical theatre. Katikala’s Thai cooking has more range than the beachside setting first suggests: garlic-fried whole fish, chicken cashew stir-fry, red curry, green curry, Penang curry, som tam, pad kee mao and a properly satisfying Pad Thai.
Mango sticky rice is the dessert to leave room for. Breakfast goes beyond toast-and-regret, with acai bowls, fruit, coffee with some backbone, and set breakfasts built around juice, fruit and a hot drink. Vegetarians have enough choice to eat properly for several days, including curries, fried rice and Pad Thai.
The restaurant sits on the Coco Lanta beachfront, with regular tables plus beanbags and low tables facing the sea. Settle in near sunset with a Coco Beach Bar cocktail; the view does the expensive-looking part for free.
Katikala suits a long, slow meal. Food can arrive at different times during busy periods, so save the tight schedule for somewhere with fluorescent lighting and a destiny to fulfil.
