Jamrat Restaurant
Description
Red duck curry arrives loaded with duck, proper spice and fluffy rice that does its job without demanding applause. Jamrat is a small side-street Thai kitchen where the cooking is far more memorable than the frontage suggests.
Pad Thai is the safe bet that turns out not to be boring, with a bright, balanced sauce and fresh wok flavour. The green curry with chicken, cashew chicken, papaya salad and chicken noodle soup all hold up. Baked pineapple rice is the sleeper hit, while the mango sticky rice deserves saving room for.
Vegetarians get more than a token tofu appearance. The tofu vegetable green curry comes packed with tofu, and fried vegetables, glass noodles and dumplings widen the options beyond rice-and-regret.
Dao and the family run a relaxed little room with generous portions, shakes, lemon iced tea and a resident cat drifting around the tables. Dinner fills up in peak season; lunch is the calmer window, with the same red curry and considerably fewer elbows.
