Heama Indian Restaurant
Description
The chickpea masala thali arrives properly spicy, with soft naan and enough going on to rescue thali from its usual fate as a tray of minor disappointments. Heama’s strongest cooking is in its thicker, slow-feeling curries: lamb masala, lamb curry, butter chicken and prawn curry all carry proper sauce.
Garlic naan and cheese naan are the safest side bets, while the vegetable samosas are enormous, packed with potato, peas and onion. The masala chai is worth ordering even after dinner; it has the cardamom-heavy warmth that makes bottled tea seem like a regrettable plumbing error.
Shanti and her husband run a small Indian-Nepali kitchen near central Lanta, with a menu that gives vegetarians more than a decorative corner. Dal fry, paneer korma, chickpea masala and vegetable curries sit alongside fish thali, chicken tikka, vindaloo and lamb dishes.
Ask for extra spice if that is your normal setting. The thali is available from late morning until late afternoon, so dinner is better spent on curry, naan and a mango lassi.
