Green Chilli Restaurant
Description
Duck khao soi, pad Thai wrapped in egg, and a steamed lemon white snapper put Green Chilli well ahead of the usual beach-road menu. The Thai cooking has proper punch: Massaman curry is rich and nutty, holy basil carries heat, and the spicy mango prawn salad cuts through the heavier plates.
Beach tables face the sunset, with the evening fire show visible from dinner. It stays calm enough for a long meal, though the soundtrack is waves, cutlery and the occasional fire-spinner doing something inadvisable with kerosene.
Breakfast deserves attention too. The boiled rice dishes are excellent, oatmeal is properly made, and the coffee holds its own after a rough boat crossing. Portions are large, prices stay friendly, and the menu also covers seafood spaghetti, garlic-butter chicken, tempura prawns and fried chicken with Japanese yellow curry.
Vegetarian and vegan eaters have plenty to work with, including pad Thai and mango sticky rice. Garlic appears with enthusiasm, so this is not the place for anyone hoping dinner will remain socially undetectable.
