Description

Triple-cooked potatoes, garlic dip and burgers with names such as Bruce Banner and Best of British give Fat Monkey its clearest purpose: proper Western comfort food after one pad Thai too many. The Chiky Cheese smash burger and Egg Maker chicken burger are the safer bets, with crisp fries and thick sauces doing their bit without needing a speech.

The kitchen roams from Margherita pizza and risotto to green curry, duck with cashews, ceviche and tuna tartare. Tom Yum with local mushrooms has serious heat and depth, while coconut tempura prawns, spring rolls and crispy beef fill the sharing side of the menu. Rice comes separately with Thai dishes, because apparently rice has formed its own independent republic.

Lanterns, dim lighting, music and the sound of running water give the room more character than most roadside dinner stops. The bar handles cocktails well, the wine list is small and carefully chosen, and Thai Spicy Mai Yai keeps its punch across a second glass.

Fat Monkey costs more than a basic Thai restaurant, and it earns that on the burgers, potatoes, cocktails and late dinner atmosphere. Book a table for a group; dishes can arrive far apart during busy stretches.
