Description

Garlic BBQ prawns with vegetable rice are the plate to chase at Cook Kai, eaten with bare feet in Khlong Nin sand and a cold coconut nearby. The beach beds are part of the setup, so lunch can stretch pleasantly beyond its original remit.

Thai food carries the menu: larb, papaya salad, green curry, massaman curry and vegetable pad Thai all land well. Stir-fried yellow noodles with chicken and the ham omelette give breakfast a sturdier answer than another sad hotel buffet.

French press coffee, fruit platters and banana-pineapple porridge make the morning side worth knowing about. Smoothies are cold, fruit-heavy and suited to the strip of shade by the tables.

Cook Kai is for affordable beach meals with proper Thai flavour, not a polished sunset-cocktail production. Settle in for the view, but give the kitchen your attention – the garlic prawns are doing far more useful work than the horizon.
