Description
The pizza comes out with a crisp base, proper thin dough and toppings that don’t slide off in a cheese avalanche. Gift works the pizza oven, and it has become the Kantiang Bay answer to the question, “Where do we eat when Thai food can wait until tomorrow?”
Thai cooking is far too good here to treat as backup. Pork nam tok has the sharp, spicy edge it needs; beef massaman is rich without becoming pudding; and the chicken satay, baked mussels, wings and seafood platter all justify lingering under the trees.
Oum’s little jungle restaurant sits back from the Kantiang Bay road, with low lights, good music and a handful of tables beneath the canopy. It feels more like finding someone’s excellent dinner spot than entering a polished restaurant (which is far more useful after a day on the beach).
The dirt track is steep, rocky and dark after sunset, so park on the main road and walk down if your scooter skills are still theoretical. Bring mosquito repellent for the tree-side tables; the spicy beef salad and bananas in coconut milk are worth defending from the local air force.
