Description
Massaman curry, tom yum and a proper 100-baht burger give Breadwinner far more purpose than its plain roadside frontage suggests. The Thai food lands with balanced seasoning and fresh ingredients, while portions are built for hungry riders returning from the national park.
The fresh fruit juices are made from fruit, not a carton with a tropical illustration doing all the work. Breakfast is also stronger than expected here: scrambled eggs, toast and omelettes are cheap, filling and reliably useful before a south-island run.
A small shelf section covers cold drinks, chips, cookies, sunscreen, mosquito spray and cigarettes. There is no alcohol, so save the sunset beer for elsewhere; this place is about curry, shakes and practical supplies.
Breadwinner sits on the road for Bamboo Beach, the waterfall and the national park, making it a solid refuel stop between dusty kilometres. The room is basic and the English menu conversation can require pointing, smiling and the occasional international mime championship.
