Cold coconuts arrive properly cold at Black Coral, which matters more than most theories of beach-bar happiness. Get there early for one, then claim a shaded table on Khlong Dao Beach and watch the sun make its nightly exit.
The Thai food is the safest bet from a menu that wanders through ribs, paninis, pizza, Swedish dishes and bratwurst with considerable enthusiasm. Go for the Thai fish dishes, ribs, prawn salad, bruschetta or those dangerously moreish paninis. Coconut and mango shakes are the better call in the afternoon.
Live music, fire shows and occasional buffet nights turn the place from daytime beach stop into a proper evening hangout. Cocktails get moving around happy hour, and the sand-side seats are prime sunset territory (nature has done most of the interior design).
Black Coral suits a long, loose beach session. The menu is broad enough for a mixed group, but the Thai plates, shakes and beach-bar atmosphere are why it deserves your time.
