Baja Taco
Description
Fish and prawn tacos are the point of the trip down Baja Taco’s steps, with homemade tortillas, fresh salsa and enough filling to make the usual two-taco plan look optimistic. The grilled beef burrito is equally serious, packed with seasoning and crisp lettuce.
A small sign off the east-coast road leads to a simple, leafy deck above the water, a few kilometres south of Lanta Old Town. It feels pleasingly off-grid without requiring a machete or a rescue beacon. Chips, guacamole, nachos, smoothies, cocktails and a properly spicy margarita cover the rest of the mission.
The kitchen leans Californian-Mexican, built around fresh ingredients and punchy sauces. Corn tortillas need requesting; the standard tacos use flour tortillas. Vegetarian and vegan choices include mushroom tacos, which hold their own beside the seafood.
Moderate prices buy large portions and a setting that turns lunch into an afternoon plan. Baja Taco is for Foodies craving fish tacos, burrito devotees and anyone bored of another roadside pad thai; the ocean-facing seats are the ones worth waiting for.
