Description
Red curry in coconut milk, garlic-fried chicken and roasted cashews with beef are the reasons to stop at Baanlanta, not merely the fact that Kantiang Bay is right there doing its usual photogenic thing. The Thai side of the menu has real pull: papaya salad, Massaman curry, chilli fry, fried rice and BBQ shrimp all fit the setting.
The terrace catches a cross-breeze off the bay, which matters at lunchtime after the national park. Sit facing the water and the whole southern end of Kantiang feels pleasantly far away from scooters, schedules and civilisation’s little beeping machines.
Vegetarian and vegan versions of the curries are available, so this is one of the easier Bay-side meals for plant-based eaters. Spice arrives restrained, leaving room to add heat. Espresso is unusually good for this stretch of the island, and the cocktails are worth lingering over after dark.
The resort setting is simple and a little weathered, with the deck and the view doing most of the decorating. Stick to Thai dishes here; they have more character than the international menu and belong beside Kantiang Bay’s long blue curve.
