Baan Peek Mai
Description
Massaman curry arrives thick, dark and properly spiced, with none of the thin orange gravy nonsense that haunts too many island menus. Wan cooks Thai food with depth: galangal and lemongrass pushing through the tom yum, fragrant coconut milk soup, and basil pork with enough punch to wake up a Chang.
The red snapper is fresh and worth ordering whole, while the fried prawns, shrimp-and-pork wontons and fried rice all land far above their modest setting. Papaya salad brings brightness to the heavier curries, and the mango salad is a sharp little side quest with a very good ending.
The room has been renovated, so old map photos belong in a museum of internet archaeology. Upstairs is the better perch for a lingering dinner, with a simple, tidy setup and no need for decorative nonsense when the kitchen is this capable.
Klong Nin has plenty of Thai menus; Baan Peek Mai is where to eat when you want food cooked from scratch with proper regional flavour. Ask Wan to point you towards a traditional dish beyond the standard curry-and-pad-thai circuit.
