Baan Khao Soi
Description
Beef khao soi is the order here: tender meat, a deep coconut curry broth, properly cooked noodles and a crown of crisp fried noodles that survives long enough to matter. The roasted chilli paste, pickled cabbage and shallots let you steer the bowl from mellow to properly awake.
Chicken, prawn and fish versions all hold up, with rich curry that stays balanced. The prawn khao soi has the house-signature status, while the beef version is the one to pick for a heavier lunch before the ride back from Old Town.
Tom yum goong and fried rice with chilli paste give the menu some range, and the cashew chicken is a solid detour for anyone travelling with a khao soi sceptic. Fruit shakes are cold, generous and particularly useful after the main-road heat has had its little joke.
The setting is a clean, leafy roadside stop a short scooter ride from Lanta Old Town, with a breezy garden seating area. Vegetarians get a vegetable-loaded khao soi here, which is rarer than it should be on an island full of menus claiming to have solved lunch.
