Description
The bagels are the reason Aleena Minimart has become a breakfast institution down its little dirt road: crisp outside, properly chewy within, and piled with combinations such as bacon, egg, cream cheese and avocado. The cafe sits out front of the shop under covered benches and plants, with beach snacks and cold beer a few steps away.
A separate vegan menu takes this far beyond the token tofu option. Scrambled tofu on sourdough, tempeh bagels, cashew cream cheese, vegan pancakes and avocado toast all get proper attention. The sabich tofu, with fried eggplant, tahini, amba and pickles in pita, is the lunch order for anyone bored of another fried-rice lap.
Bread baking is the serious business here. Grab a focaccia sandwich, baguette, English muffin or banana bread for the beach, then add a fruit shake. The coconut brownie has enough following to make restraint seem needlessly theoretical.
Dinner has more range than the minimart setting suggests, including buffalo chicken nachos, quesadillas, veggie burgers and Thai dishes from the adjoining Mr Pad Thai counter. This is casual, plant-filled, slightly tucked away and built for lingering over food, not candlelit declarations of eternal devotion.
