Lay Sod
Description
Garlic shrimp, cho chee green fish curry and steamed lemon fish are the things to chase at Lay Sod. The fish arrives tender, properly flavoured and not sacrificed to an all-day curry pot.
The Thai cooking is fresh, punchy and inexpensive, with generous plates that make a second visit dangerously easy. Tom yum goong, glass noodle salad with prawns, prawn massaman curry and papaya salad all deserve attention. The grilled chicken drumsticks with som tam are worth grabbing when they appear.
Vegetarians have more to work with than the standard token fried rice. The soy-sauce noodles and veggie massaman curry carry proper depth, and vegan preparation can be requested. Yellow udon with seafood is another solid choice for anyone who thinks noodles should arrive with purpose.
The setting is plain and local, on the main road, with bike parking outside and football sometimes playing at the back. Cash only, so do not arrive armed solely with a card and confidence – neither cooks dinner.
