Description

Weathered teak shophouses on stilts are the point of Lanta Old Town, with the sea visible beneath the floorboards and across the eastern bay. The worthwhile stretch is one compact street, lined with cafés, bars, small boutiques and souvenir stalls.

Late afternoon suits it best. The wooden verandas catch the cooler air, lanterns come on, and a cold beer over the water beats another hour under a west-coast beach umbrella. Pinto is a reliable dinner stop, while Sephia Cafe’s balcony is built for fruit shakes and watching boats nose around the pier.

Shopping is for modest souvenirs, clothes, crafts and snacks, though many stalls stock the same elephant trousers and fridge magnets in slightly altered formation. Look harder for handmade pieces; they turn up among the identical rows, playing a small game of retail hide-and-seek.

Take the pier for wide views across the water, then wander beyond the main strip for the Chinese, Malay and Thai character that gave the town its bones. Lanta Old Town is a half-day detour for foodies and slow walkers, not an all-day attraction with endless sights.
