Beef larb arrives sharp with lime and herbs, the kind of plate that makes the Old Town strip feel slightly over-dressed. Som Tam Ja Pu sits near the junction outside the main waterfront stretch, with four tables, plastic chairs and a kitchen built for serious Thai food.
The southern-style cooking has range. Tam taeng cucumber salad brings heat and crunch; the spicy prawn soup and red curry soup have proper depth. Beef with garlic, chicken with cashew nuts, morning glory and basil chicken all land fast and hot. Pad Thai is unusually good here, which is dangerous knowledge on an island with far too much average Pad Thai.
Mango sticky rice is the required finish, while shrimp glass-noodle salad and massaman gai give the menu some welcome detours. Portions are cheap enough to order broadly, and the cooking stays firmly local.
Alcohol is not sold, but Seven Eleven is around the corner and outside drinks are welcome with plastic glasses provided. The four tables fill quickly, and the short walk from Old Town’s main street is part of the filtering system – anyone unwilling to make it probably wanted a cocktail menu.
