Mu Ko Lanta National Park
Description
The first 400 metres of the jungle loop climb hard enough to settle any debate about flip-flops. After that, the 2km trail calms down into shaded forest, old trees, lizards and dusky leaf monkeys, before swinging past the lighthouse and back to the beach.
The south-coast road is part of the outing. It gets steep, winding and properly rough near the park, so inexperienced scooter riders should think twice before treating it as a casual sunset cruise. Langurs often sit beside the road, which is charming until somebody decides their snack bag looks negotiable.
The beach below the trail is the payoff: a compact bay for a swim, coral patches close to shore, showers, toilets and snack stalls nearby. The lighthouse viewpoint is good for wide Andaman Sea photos, though the forest trail is the stronger reason to make the long ride south.
Start the loop from the stairs near the parking area, so the steep section comes uphill. Bring water, mosquito spray, proper shoes and a bag that closes; the macaques around the car park have studied human packing systems.
